Dwi’n Dysgu is Mari Luz Cervantes’ original play for young audiences about multicultural identity and the Welsh language.

How do you connect with local culture and history while staying connected to your heitage? After moving from Spain to Wales, Lucia is about to start at a new Welsh medium school and is trying to figure it all out.

Dwi’n Dysgu

Pam hwn? - Why this?

  • We know that speaking Welsh opens up work opportunities, educational opportunities and cultural experiences. Encouraging equal access to the Welsh language for immigrant children allows them the opportunity to also have equal access to all the advantages that come with the Welsh language.

  • Staging more diverse experiences of Welsh identity and language learning allows audiences understand the immigrant experience of adapting while preserving identity.

  • Reflect the reality of living in multicultural Wales!

I bwy? - For who?

Most Welsh-language theatre assumes fluency; this show instead celebrates the process of learning Welsh. Dwi’n Dysgu is one of very few children’s theatre pieces where a character learns Welsh during the action—allowing young learners in the audience to see themselves reflected

I want people who care about Wales but don’t speak Welsh (or are new to learning Welsh) to still have an opportunity to engage in Welsh language theatre.

It’s also important that audiences that are fluent in Welsh get to see theatre that represents different ways of being.

Dwi’n Dysgu has had two phases of research and development which would not have been possible without the support of Theatr Iolo as their 2024-2026 Platform Artist, Arts Council Wales Create Funding, C3SC Youth Led Grant and Nuestra Escuella Cardiff for hosting a sharing of Dwi’n Dysgu for the young Spanish heritage learner’s group.
